Save Vault

A copied save that never appears

Four checks, in the order that actually finds the problem. Most broken-save reports end at step two.

A save that fails to load is nearly always in the wrong folder.

1. Is the game actually closed?

Phantom Blade Zero rewrites its save when it exits. If you copy a file in while the game is running, even sitting at the title screen, that write can land on top of yours and the file you copied is gone before you ever saw it. Close the game completely, confirm the process is not in Task Manager, then copy.

2. Did it go into the right SteamID folder?

The folder name is your SteamID64 and there can be more than one. Paste the file into the folder that already contains a 1RealTime folder with a recent timestamp, that is the account you are currently playing. The path is in the location guide.

A quick sanity check: after you copy, the file's modified time should be the moment you copied it. If it is older, you looked at the wrong folder or the copy did not happen.

3. Did Steam Cloud put the old one back?

This is the one that makes people think the site is lying to them. Steam uploads on exit and downloads on launch when the remote copy is newer. If you replace a file and immediately hit Play, Steam can decide the cloud copy is the truth and restore it.

The ordering that works:

  1. Close the game.
  2. Turn off Steam Cloud for Phantom Blade Zero (Steam → right-click the game → Properties → General).
  3. Copy the replacement file in.
  4. Launch, confirm the save loaded, then quit normally.
  5. Turn Cloud back on. Your version is now the remote one.

4. Is the file actually the file?

Before you blame the game, confirm the download arrived intact. Every save on this site publishes its SHA-256 on the download page; on Windows, certutil -hashfile PBZSaveGame.sav SHA256 prints what you have. A truncated download is a real cause of "damaged save" and it is silent otherwise.

A structural check is possible without the key too: a PBZS v3 file starts with the ASCII bytes PBZS, then version 3. If the first four bytes are anything else, the file is not a Phantom Blade Zero save at all, some downloads get saved as ZIP or HTML by mistake.

When the save is rejected rather than missing

"Damaged" and "missing" are different failures. Missing means the game never found a file to load. Damaged means it found one and could not authenticate it. The second is what happens when a save was written by a newer build than the one you are running, or when a file was edited with the wrong key. The format page explains the authentication step.

Recovering what you overwrote

Look inside the 1RealTime, 2Hourly and 3Daily folders first, the game's own rotation is the fastest undo and it needs no tools. Only after those are exhausted is a cloud copy worth chasing.

Closing the game first is the step people skip, and it is the one that undoes the copy.

Why does my copied save not show up at the Bell?

Almost always one of three things: the file went into the wrong SteamID folder, Steam Cloud restored the old file over it, or the game was still running when you copied and overwrote it on exit. Check those in that order.

The game says my save is damaged. Is the file bad?

Not necessarily. A PBZS v3 save is rejected when it cannot be authenticated, and that happens when the container version is newer than the build you are running, a save written by a patched game can be unreadable on an unpatched one. Verify the file’s SHA-256 against the published value first.

Can I recover a save I overwrote?

Try the 1RealTime, 2Hourly and 3Daily folders inside your SteamID folder before anything else, the game rotates backups there. If those are gone too, Steam Cloud may still hold a version, and that is the last resort.

Why did my save revert to an older state after I edited it?

Cloud sync. The edited file was newer on disk but Steam still had an older remote copy and wrote it back. Turn off Cloud for this game, replace the file, launch once, quit, then re-enable Cloud so your version becomes the remote one.

Do I need to start a New Game for a downloaded save to appear?

No. A replacement save appears under Continue or at the Bell, not under New Game. If you have just started a fresh run, you may have created a new save over the one you copied in.
